Overview
The ICCS Weather Log Android application is the frontend interface of the crowdsourced weather data collection and sharing platform developed by the KSCSTE - Institute for Climate Change Studies (ICCS). It serves as a key tool to enhance Kerala's climate resilience by aggregating weather data from multiple sources in a decentralized, user-contributed data collection mode.
Purpose and Challenges Addressed
Kerala's increasing vulnerability to extreme climate events necessitates timely and accurate weather data for effective preparedness and response. Traditional manual data logging methods face several limitations:
- Delayed Information: Slow transmission of data from field to analysis centers.
- Data Loss Risk: Manual records are susceptible to damage or misplacement.
- Inefficient Decision-Making: Outdated data compromises the effectiveness of climate-related planning and emergency response efforts.
- Lack of Unified Data Repository: Lack of integration of unofficial, high-frequency local weather observations collected by community members.
The Solution: ICCS Weather Log Android Application
Inspired by these critical challenges, our team has developed the "ICCS Weather Log" Android application. This user-friendly app transforms the traditional data collection process into an efficient, digital workflow, ensuring data integrity and accessibility.
Key Features of the ICCS Weather Platform
🔒 Secure Multi-Layered Authentication
The app is a private, closed user group platform available only to authorized weather data loggers from pre-registered partner institutions. Access is strictly controlled and requires administrative verification and approval. This model ensures data security, integrity, and privacy. The multi-layered authentication of the app integrates:
- Secure cloud login using Firebase Authentication.
- Local 4-digit PIN on devices for data submission.
📋 Centralized & Dynamic Data Logging
The app unifies data collection across all partner institutions. It features a fully dynamic data-entry form, allowing the ICCS admin to instantly add or change variables (like "Rainfall," "Humidity," "Solar," etc.) from a central server without requiring an app update.
📈 On-Demand User Data Reports
Empowering the data loggers, the app allows any user to instantly download a 30-day report of their own station's data. This report is generated as an analysis-ready CSV file, formatted for easy use in Excel or Google Sheets.
🔑 Secure, Role-Based API for Partners
This platform is more than just an app; it's a data source. We provide a secure, server-side API for partner institutions, researchers, and government bodies. API keys are assigned specific roles (e.g., "Admin," "District-Level," "Department-Level") to ensure organizations can only access the specific data they are authorized to see, all in real-time.

Introduction & Consent
The "ICCS Weather Log" application ("the App") is a specialized tool developed by the KSCSTE - Institute for Climate Change Studies ("ICCS", "We", "Our"). This app is intended for use only by authorized data loggers from pre-registered partner institutions.
It is not for public use, and accounts are created exclusively by an ICCS administrator. By logging in and using this application, you ("You", "User") hereby consent to this Privacy Policy and agree to the Terms of Use.
Privacy Policy
This section describes how your data is collected, used, and protected.
Data We Collect
We collect the following information to facilitate the project:
- Personally Identifiable Information (PII): When your account is created, we store your email address, and your assigned department, district, station name, and station location.
- User-Generated Data: We collect and store all weather data and observations you log through the app (e.g., rainfall, temperature, etc.). This data is linked to your user account, station, and district.
- App Usage Data: We use Firebase services that may automatically collect basic, non-personal diagnostic data (like app crashes) to help us fix bugs and improve stability.
How We Use Your Data
Your personal and weather data is used for specific purposes:
- To identify your station's logs and verify data quality.
- For aggregation into larger datasets for scientific research, climate modelling, and analysis by ICCS.
- To create data products for partner government institutions for use in disaster management, irrigation, and agricultural planning.
- Your personal email is used for account management (like password resets) and to contact you regarding your data.
We will never sell your personal data to third-party advertisers.
Data Storage & Security
All data is stored and protected on Google's secure Firebase platform. We use industry-standard database security rules to ensure that:
- You can only read and edit your own log history.
- All data transmitted between the app and the server is encrypted.
- Your local 4-digit PIN is hashed, salted, and stored securely on your device using Android's Keystore system.
Data Sharing (Our API)
Aggregated and detailed weather data will be made available to our partner institutions and researchers via a secure, key-protected API. This data will be linked to your station, district, and department, but your personal email address will not be shared.
Terms of Use
User Accounts & Verification
This app is not for public use. Users are pre-registered by ICCS by verifying their institutional affiliation and authorization level. Administrative approval grants access only to users who belong to recognized partner institutions or recognized individual data loggers. This process ensures that only trusted contributors participate in the network, safeguarding data quality.
User Responsibilities
This app is a tool for your professional role as a data logger. By logging in and using this app, you agree to:
- Provide data that is accurate and complete to the best of your ability.
- Safeguard your account credentials and local PIN.
- Use the app and its data only for its intended professional and research purposes.
Institutional Data Backup
It is the sole responsibility of each participating institution to maintain a separate, local copy of their records. ICCS is not responsible for the long-term archival or backup of data for individual institutions.
Data Deletion
Your account is provided by ICCS. If you wish to have your account or associated data deleted, please contact the ICCS administrator at the email address below.
