Climate change and extreme weather events has become a reality in everyday life of people across the globe. Rapid industrialisation and uncontrolled use of fossil fuels has pumped in significant quantities of carbon dioxide into the environment, the concentration of which in the atmosphere is hovering around 430 ppm currently. This has resulted in accelerated warming of air and sea surface temperature which is manifesting as abrupt and extreme weather patterns across the globe. Since air-sea interactions control the weather/ climate events marine ecosystems, it is very important to understand the changes in the marine environment. While increased SST is triggering changes in the distribution of marine organisms such as borealisation of the species, and bleaching of corals, increased miscibility of CO2 into the sea water is altering the pH. Ocean acidification is seriously affecting shell forming organisms such as molluscans and reef building corals. Fish catch also experiencing changes which is affecting the livelihood of fishermen as well as the economics of the fishing industry. Increasing prevalence of harmful algal blooms and jellification of tropical and polar oceans has also become a serious problem that is affecting the fishermen. The proposed lecture will look at the basics of climate change scenario, with special reference to marine ecosystem health and its implications to the humans.
